PAIN-2-POWER PERSON OF THE WEEK ~ THATSAPHON SAII

THATSAPHON SAII: A SIMPLE ACT OF EXTRAORDINARY COURAGE

I am sure that heroic acts take place all over this nation and around the world every day, but this one was recorded on video and deserves special attention.  That’s because a young man named Thatsaphon Saii, a member of the Royal Thai Navy’s Air and Coastal Defence Command Operation Unit 491, was willing to risk his life to save four kittens stranded on a fishing boat that had caught fire and was sinking off the coast of Thailand.

The crew members of the ill-fated vessel had already left it earlier when they were picked up by a passing boat.  But Saii noticed the panicked kittens standing on the bow of the boat.  So he dove into choppy seas, swam 50 feet, placed three of the kittens in bag (which he held aloft as he returned to his boat) and let one of them ride on his shoulders.

Now, I know we have bigger things to worry about in this world than four cats.  I get that.  Trust me.  I do.  Yet there is something utterly magnificent about the empathy that Saii displayed in rescuing those panicked creatures.   There is something wonderful about the selflessness he showed in doing it.  There is something reassuring in all of it about the fundamental decency of some human beings.

I have no idea what else is going on in Saii’s life.  I am sure he confronts the complications we all must.  I am sure he has faced hurdles.  Who doesn’t?  Yet, in an instant, he made a decision that was pure and good and an inspiration.  I think those are the moments we should all be looking for—moments when we can be miraculously powerful.  And that’s why Thatsaphon Saii is the Pain-2-Power Person of the Week.
